Campus Rómulo J. Peña Maturana

Rómulo José Peña Maturana, was the most illustrious and well prepared educator of Atacama. He completed his studies in Germany at the University of Leipzig and proceeded to teach for the Liceo de Hombres de Copiapó. He then went on to become the first director of the Escuela Normal. Rómulo J. Peña's work is still seen today in the current degree and coursework of both the Education and General Basic Pedagogy Education programs at the University of Atacama. Both programs were created when the Escuela Normal de Copiapó was founded in July 1905, aimed at training primary school teachers, especially those who will serve in the north of Chile.

In 1897, Rómulo J. Peña created our current stenography course according to the methods he acquired in Germany. In addition, he established a complex and pioneer cabinet in the Escuela Normal for experimental psychology. Those involved measured the intelligence, intellectual vigor, and physical resistance of students in order to qualify them scientifically.
